About Computer Viruses
Computer viruses are computer programs that are hidden in other seemingly meaningless programs. It produces copies of itself and inserts them into other programs or files. It usually performs a malicious action (such as destroying data). Once created and released, it can unknowingly take over your computer without your knowledge. There are three versions of a virus:
Macro viruses: A macro is a piece of computer code that is embedded into a data file.
Worms: Worms are very similar to viruses. They are computer programs that duplicate functional copies of themselves to other computer systems via network connections. They contain some process that will interfere with the normal use of a computer or a program.
Trojan horses: A Trojan horse is a program that does something undocumented which the programmer intended. Users would not accept if they knew about it.
About Spyware and Adware
Spyware and Adware are data collecting programs that secretly gather information about you. They relay it to advertisers and other interested parties that may be criminal. Adware usually displays banners or unwanted pop-up windows. In many cases, unwanted programs of this sort do both functions. You could unknowingly install spyware or adware when you click on an advertisement, install freeware or file-sharing programs. Many of these programs are designed to track your Internet browsing habits. This can include frequented sites and favorite downloads, and then provide advertising companies with marketing data. Some spyware programs can negatively affect your computer’s performance. A good antivirus software package can help you to stay protected against these wicked programs.
Virus Detection and Removal
Have you ever experienced sluggish computer performance, computer crashes, frequent popups, or your machine seems to act like its Bi-polar? Your machine is likely infected and requires professional assistance.
Anti-virus software today is very sophisticated. However, virus writers are often a step ahead of the software. New viruses are constantly being released that current anti-virus software cannot recognize. The key to anti-virus software is detection. Once an infected file has been detected, it can sometimes be repaired. If not, the file can be quarantined so that the viral code will not be executed. Generic virus detection is inadequate for current and new viruses. Anti-virus software is updated with new lists of viruses almost on a daily basis. There are four major methods of virus detection in use today. These methods include: scanning, integrity checking, interception, and heuristic detection.
There are a large number of antivirus detection software programs out on the market today. They run from free to under $100 a year.
